Teaser Tuesday (1)

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by Should Be Reading.

Here are the rules:
•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

1st teaser:  "I hadn't meant to be so nasty, but since the rebellion, she had never once acknowledged the possibility of our relationship, insisting it had been another one of Karla's twisted tricks."

2nd teaser: "Until that moment, I hadn't known true terror."

This is actually harder than it seems, I just didn't know which sentences to pick from that page! Well I hope you liked them! So, what were your teasers for this Tuesday? I would enjoy reading yours! Thanks for reading my first ever Teaser Tuesday and happy blogging!

Author Quotes!

Hey everyone, so how was your weekend? I haven't done Author Quotes in a while and I thought it would be nice to do it again. Here are two picks that I found:

"All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you; the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse, and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was." ~Ernest Hemmingway (1898-1961) American Writer.

"The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts." ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

Do you have any favourite quotes? I would love to hear!

I wanted to do my first In My Mailbox meme today, but unfortunetly I still have to go to the library to get some new books to review so I'll have to pospone it. Sorry! But I will definitely being doing one this week! I also wanted to try out Teaser Tuesday and Waiting On Wednesday for something new and fun! Be sure to check back to look at those... I would be very happy if you did! Thanks for reading and  happy blogging!

Review for Lost Voices by Sarah Porter

Lost Voices (Lost Voices, #1)"Lost Voices"

Author: Sarah Porter
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's
Source: ARC ebook from netGalley
Release Date: July 4th, 2011
304 pages

View lulu-5sta...jpg in slide show

What happens to the girls nobody sees—the ones who are ignored, mistreated, hidden away? The girls nobody hears when they cry for help?
Fourteen-year-old Luce is one of those lost girls. After her father vanishes in a storm at sea, she is stuck in a grim, gray Alaskan fishing village with her alcoholic uncle. When her uncle crosses an unspeakable line, Luce reaches the depths of despair. Abandoned on the cliffs near her home, she expects to die when she tumbles to the icy, churning waves below. Instead, she undergoes an astonishing transformation and becomes a mermaid. A tribe of mermaids finds Luce and welcomes her in—all of them, like her, lost girls who surrendered their humanity in the darkest moments of their lives. The mermaids are beautiful, free, and ageless, and Luce is thrilled with her new life until she discovers the catch: they feel an uncontrollable desire to drown seafarers, using their enchanted voices to lure ships into the rocks.
- Summary from Goodreads

Wow what a read! I gave this book 5 stars! And I didn't just do that because it was my first ARC. If you pick up this book thinking along the lines of Arial the mermaid... lets just say there is no singing crabs or talking fish. It is not a happy upbeat book. It uses a disturbing issue-girls being mistreated-to make a story. Sarah Porter did a really amazing job with this book, well written.  Luce is quite the character, and I found it nice to see her go from shy to being able to speak her mind-she grew along with the story. This book is about friendship, abuse, and forgiveness. There were a few things that bothered me, pretty small things though which didn't affect my rating. Like, the other mermaids are really rude, some of them really nasty at times. And since the mermaids hair doesn't grow, those with short hair are stuck with it, like Luce, and are naked on the top. That bothered me a bit. Finally, the ending. It just stopped at a time that I really wanted to keep reading. Lots of questions left unanswered at the end. Good thing that its a sequel but it is a big cliffhanger...and I hate waiting! A great read, and I really can't wait to get my hands on the second one. I need to know some answers, especially about this one part (can't say it--spoiler)! I am going to be buying it as soon as its released....and I highly recommend it if you don't mind a darker book!

Excerpt:

Gently she sang back, letting her voice glide into complex harmonies with all the inhuman voices humming around her. A crystalline sphere of water floated up between her hands, raised itself nearer. Luce almost wondered if it could see her, then stroked against her lips. It felt like a kiss.

Book Blogger Hop (8) and Follow Friday (3)

Hey everyone! It's that time again.... Yay!

Book Blogger Hop:
Book Blogger Hop
Book blogger hop is hosted by Jennifer, for more details go to Crazy for books.

This week's question comes from Alex who blogs at Geek on the Brink:

"What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?"

My answer:
This is a tough question. I am going to say the plot. Because that's the main focus when I pick up a book. Will it be exciting? Boring? The plot makes me decide if I want to read it. But say the book has a good plot but the characters don't live up to it or aren't developed enough...then characters can turn the book into a downer... Like I said a hard question.

Follow Friday:

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee, for more details go to Parajunkee's View. This weeks question is:

What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

My answer:
Sorry fellow bloggers, but I can't really answer this. I'm only in grade 9. But I can say that I am into photography so that probably will be my major!

Thanks for stopping by and reading my answers! So what do you think, plot or characters....what did you study? I am excited to hear your answers! Happy blogging....

Review for Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

"Stargirl"
Author: Jerry Spinelli
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
Source: Public Library
186 pages

View lulu-4sta...jpg in slide show

Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first.

Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal.
  -Summary from Goodreads

Jerry Spinelli did an amazing job with Stargirl! He painted this character that to some may seem creepy or unreal but to others she is an image of who you would want to be. Stargirl is always thinking of others instead of herself, she is original and doesn't seem to be bothered with other peoples thoughts of her. The way Jerry wrote, it was almost poetic at times. There is a deep message in this book, and that message can be different for every person who reads it. This book is heartfelt. It is sincere. It is enchanting. I recommend this book, I did enjoy it. I gave it four stars. Why not five? Well, though it is well written, has a strong message and overall a good book, I don't think I could re-read it.

Exerpt:

She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make out of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.

Review for Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Deadly Little Secret (Touch, #1)
"Deadly Little Secret"
Author: Laurie Faria Stolarz
Publisher: Disney Hyperion Books
Source: Local Public Library
252 pages
Rating: 4 stars
View lulu-4sta...jpg in slide show

Some secrets shouldn't be kept...
Up until three months ago, everything in sixteen-year-old Camelia's life had been fairly ordinary: decent grades; an okay relationship with her parents; and a pretty cool part-time job at the art studio downtown. But when Ben, the mysterious new guy, starts junior year at her high school, Camelia's life becomes anything but ordinary.
Rumored to be somehow responsible for his ex-girlfriend's accidental death, Ben is immediately ostracized by everyone on campus. Except for Camelia. She's reluctant to believe the rumors, even when her friends try to convince her otherwise. She's inexplicably drawn to Ben...and to his touch. But soon, Camelia is receiving eerie phone calls and strange packages with threatening notes. Ben insists she is in danger, and that he can help--but can he be trusted? She knows he's hiding something... but he's not the only one with a secret.

I started this book thinking it would be a good mystery--and it was! The writing style that the author uses is very easy to follow along. Though this is not a hard topic...it does have some parts that some people may find hard to understand. Let me just say this book had a big, I want to say, twist. But its not really a twist. Let me try and describe. The author knows that the reader probably would think along this one line of thinking and uses that to her advantage, to make the reader surprised by the actual outcome. When you read it, you'll understand. I loved that about this book! I really enjoyed this book! I hope that my library is holding the second one in the series, if not I will be super disappointed! I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good suspense novel! I gave it four stars... My hat is tipped to the author, this was a very enjoyable read!

Excerpt:

I could have died three months ago. Ever since, things haven't quite been the same for me. It happened on the last day of school. I was walking across the parking lot by the gym when my earring slipped off---a hammered sterling-sliver hoop clasp that never seemed to fit quite right. But the pair was my favourite, given to me by my mother just months before, on my sixteenth birthday. I squatted down to searth the pavement. Everything that happened next sped by in what felt like a three second blur: Gloria Beckham's car peeling across the parking lot in my direction. Me, sort of there frozen there, on hands and knees, assuming the car would come to a sudden halt when she saw me. It didn't. It kept racing toward me, toward the two hockey nets that Todd McCaffrey had left in the middle of the lot while he went in to fetch more equipment. At some point, I heard Todd's voice yell out, "Stop!" Then the car plowed into the hockey nets at a speed high enough to crush them beneath the grill. And it didn't stop there. The car continued toward me without missing a beat. I imagine my heart sped up, that my adrenaline did that hormonal-pumping thing it does when it's trying to brace you for what happens next. But what happened next I could never have prepared myself for. Being shoved out of the way....

Review for The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

The Truth about Forever"The Truth About Forever"

Author: Sarah Dessen
Publisher: Penguin Group
Source: Local Public Library
Rathing: 5 stars
374 pages

Sixteen-year-old Macy Queen is looking forward to a long, boring summer. Her boyfriend is going away. She's stuck with a dull-as-dishwater job at the library. And she'll spend all of her free time studying for the SATs or grieving silently with her mother over her father's recent unexpected death. But everything changes when Macy is corralled into helping out at one of her mother's open house events, and she meets the chaotic Wish Catering crew. Before long, Macy joins the Wish team. She loves everything about, the work and the people. But the best thing about Wish is Wes—artistic, insightful, and understanding Wes—who gets Macy to look at life in a whole new way, and really start living it. - Summary from Goodreads

I absolutely loved this book. It was good enough to put on my wish list on amazon. Seriously. This book goes deeper than what I usually read, sure it is a sweet, quickish read, but for someone who lost her father as well, it touches home. Though I didn't find myself in Macey's shoes it is a real plot. A real story of a teenager that starts her summer as a girl who is secretly miserable (even though she doesn't realize it) and comes out in the end as Macey, the real Macey. The characters in this book are perfect... From Wes (he's amazing) to Delia to Kristy to her mom! And of course can't forget Bert! Haha when you read it you'll see what I mean, each character is so uniquely different and yet go together just right! I would join the Wish team in a heartbeat! This book also had laughs, the Wish is quite funny! All I can say it this book was amazing and very well written. Sarah Dessen did an amazing job! I gave this book 5 stars! It is a keeper... I highly recommend this book.

Excerpt:

“What else, what else,” she said as she reached the island, sliding the tray there. “What else did we
need?” She pressed a hand to her forehead, closing her eyes.
“Ice,” I said, and she turned around and looked at me.
“Ice,” she repeated. Then she smiled. “Thanks. Who are you?”
“Macy. This is my mom’s house.”
Her expression changed, but only slightly. I had a feeling she knew what was coming.
I took a breath. “She wanted me to come and check that everything’s all right. And to convey that
she’s—”
“Incredibly pissed,” she finished for me, nodding.
“Well, not
Just then, there was a splashing crash from the next room, followed by another short silence. Delia
glanced over at the door, just as the toddler started wailing again.
“Now?” she said to me.
“Well . . . yes,” I said. Actually, I was betting this was an understatement. “Now, she’s probably
pissed.”
“Oh, dear.” She put a hand on her face, shaking her head. “This is a disaster.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. I felt nervous enough just watching all this: I couldn’t imagine being
responsible for it.
“Well,” she said, after a second, “in a way, it’s good. We know where we stand. Now things can only
get better. Right?”
I didn’t say anything, which probably didn’t inspire much confidence. Just then, the oven timer went off with a cheerful bing! noise. "Okay," she said suddenly, as if this had signaled a call to action. "Macey. Can you answer a question?"
“Sure,” I said.
“How are you with a spatula?”
This hadn’t been what I was expecting. “Pretty good,” I said finally.
“Wonderful,” she said. “Come here.”

Busting the Newbie Blues--meme hosted by Small Reviews!

Small Review has started a meme with the purpose to help smaller blogs gain a bit more of a following and maybe even learn about what they want on their blog and how others have achieved it! This runs through to the end of December. Doesn't this just describe my blog? A newbie...well I have been doing it for a month but hey its not that long. So to participate I had to choose which survey of questions I would answer I went with "New Blogger"...my blog isn't very big so thats why I chose it. Here it is:

1. When did you start your blog?

I started blogging on October 23, 2010.

2. Why did you start your blog?

I started my blog because I wanted to share my opinions/reviews of the books I read. Also, by stumbling on other YA blogs I found it looked  fun so I took it up!

3.What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge I would have to say is getting enough or newer books to read. Since I cannot buy books (I'm basically broke) I rely on my library. I live in a small town so our library does not feature newer books and there are barely any YA books to begin with.

4.What do you find most discouraging about being a new blogger?

Looking at other book blogs that are literally flourishing and saying "Wow, why isn't that me?" or "How can I get there?" I just wasn't sure how to get my blog out there.

5.What do you find most encouraging?

That all the bloggers I have contacted recieve me kindly and helped me out.

6.What do you like best about the blogs you read? Have you tried to replicate this in your blog?

I like how the blogs I read, feature books I'm interested in. Yes, I have tried to replicate but its not going so well because all the books they feature are new...and look so good!

7.What do you dislike about blogs you’ve read? Do you try to avoid this?

I don't think I do have anything that I dislike from the blogs I read...for the second quesiton, yes I guess I would avoid that if it happened.

8.Any advice for other new bloggers?

Advice for new bloggers, hmmm... What really helped me to get started and find new blogger pals was events like The Blog Hop and Follow Friday. So check those out because a.)they're super fun to participate in b.) you meet lots of new bloggers and c.) followers start popping up!

9.Anything else you’d like to share about your experience?

Yes, I think blogging about books is great. Why? Well because of the obvious reasons above and because it also allows you to read about books (on other sites) that you may have not even taken a glance at before!

10.Is there anything you’d like to tell us about your blog?

My blog isn't amazing or spectacular or even good but I do post a blog everyday and it comes from my heart...(ok I'm getting sappy) lets just say that whatever I post is one hundred percent true and honest!

If you WANT TO KNOW MORE about this please click on this link: http://smallreview.blogspot.com/2010/12/event-busting-newbie-blues.html

Thank you for reading and have a great day!

Review for Lucky T by Kate Brian

"Lucky T"
Author: Kate Brian
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Source: Public Library
Rating: 4 stars
291 pages

So far, Carrie Fitzgerald's sixteen years have been pretty sweet. Straight A's, an adorable boyfriend, a starting position on the varsity basketball team...
But Carrie's luck is about to, well, change.
Suddenly, her boyfriend dumps her (to "hang out with his friends"!), she and her best friend have a massive blowout, and she gets a D on a biology test. Carrie knows what's wrong -- her mom accidentally donated her lucky T-shirt to Help India. That one adorable, perfect T-shirt was the source of all her good fortune.
So Carrie does what any girl would do: She's going to India. Cross your fingers and hope that Carries finds adventure, love, and maybe just a little good luck along the way.... - Summary from Goodreads

I liked this book. I really did. Kate did a very nice job of conveying what it would feel like for a teenage girl to lose a precious item (which is more that just lucky to her, as you find out during the read). Even though I would never find myself in India of all places for a lousy T-shirt (even if it's lucky), it did put adventure into the story. And as always I like a good romance, I was satisfied throughout the book. Even though when she gets dumped by her boyfriend I kind of wanted to punch him --quite honestly. I do recommend this book if you like a.) foreign countries b.) luck c.) romance and d.) friendship. I gave this book 4 stars! Hooray for Kate Brian!

Excerpt:

"Celia, where's the stuff my mom gave you for Help India? My favourite T-shirt was in there.
"Oh, Carrie, I'm sorry," Celia said, finallly focusing on Carrie's face again. "The Airway Express people picked those boxes up a couple of hours ago."
Carrie suddenly felt nauseated for the second time that day. She sat down on the closest footrest and put her head between her legs. Vivid flashes of triumphant moments with the T flased through her mind...
"Oh, wait. I've got the receipt right here," Celia said suddenly. "We can call them. Maybe we can still get it back."
Carrie's head jerked up so fast she gave herself whiplash. The pink slip of paper looked like gold to her. Celia rushed out and came back a moment later with a cordless phone. She dialed the number and held the phone to her ear, smiling encouragingly at Carrie.
"Hello? Yes, I'm calling to inquire about packages I sent out this afternoon. I'd like to stop them if I can," Celia said into the phone, glancing hopefully at Carrie, who crossed her fingers on both hands.
:Yes, the reciept number is 2789457," Celia said.
Time froze. Carrie couldn't breathe.
"Yes, I see. Well, thank you for checking," Celia said. She looked down and hit the off button on the phone. "I'm sorry dear. The plane already left for India."

Book Blogger Hop (6) and Follow Friday (1)

Hey, here are this weeks questions:

BOOK BLOGGER HOP:

This week's question comes from Marce who blogs at Tea Time With Marce:

"What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?"
My answer: Can I skip it? I, to my dismay, have not read a very popular or hyped book at all (isn't that sad...I blame my library) anyways I don't feel qualified to answer this. As for the second part of the question, I would be totally honest about how I felt when reading the book.

 FOLLOW FRIDAY:

What do you do besides reading / reviewing as a hobby??

My answer: Wow, I have a lot of hobbies. I love baking, cooking, sketching, soccer, playing guitar/piano and lots more. I love hobbies, they keep me busy! Lol.

So what is everyone else's answers? Just leave a link and I'll check out your answer at your blog or of course you can comment or do absoulutely nothing! Up to you... :D Thanks for reading everyone! Enjoy your weekend!

These sound really good. I have started with Lucky T (its shorter) and have got about half way through. It`s a nice read so far. We`ll see how it goes. I can`t wait to start the next one! Thanks for reading!
